There’s a terrific vignette in Carrie Fisher’s one-woman show and book, Wishful Drinking. She tells the story of her mother, Debbie Reynolds, being disciplined by her own mother, Carrie’s grandmother, in Texas. After sassing back or some such offense, Debbie Reynolds’s mother puts Debbie in the closet to teach her a lesson. After about an hour, sitting in her mother’s closet, Debbie Reynolds asks for a glass of water. Her mother wants to know why. Debbie Reynolds says, “Because I’ve spit all over your clothes and now I want to spit all over your shoes.”
There are so many reasons why I love that story. It’s also terrific inspiration as I struggle along writing this memoir (first deadline: Oct. 30) as Wishful Drinking was not only a one-woman show, but also a bestselling book and HBO special. And of course, Carrie Fisher first documented the relationship with her mother in the fabulous Postcards from the Edge. Thought I’d treat us to Debbie Reynolds as played by Shirley McLean (and Meryl Streep as Carrie Fisher), then Debbie Reynolds herself starring in Singin’ in the Rain with a host of amazing actors. Think of her spitting on her mothers shoes as you watch.
